چکیده

In this paper we present a mechanism for determining nearoptimal prices for tasks in online labor markets, often used for crowdsourcing. In particular, the mechanisms are designed to handle the intricacies of markets like Mechanical Turk where workers arrive online and requesters have budget constraints. The mechanism is incentive compatible, budget feasible, and has competitive ratio performance and also performs well in practice. To demonstrate the mechanism’s practical effectiveness we conducted experiments on the Mechanical Turk plat-

Revenue-Maximizing Stable Pricing in Online Labor Markets

In online labor markets, millions of paid tasks are performed by workers every day. We solve the stable pricing problem, that is, given the information about tasks and workers, to find a revenue-maximizing mechanism – pricing and allocation – that is stable (where no worker or task is treated unfairly), and truthful (tasks reveal their true needs). We propose two truthful, stable mechanisms nam...

Increased Efficiency through Pricing in Online Labor Markets

We present a matching-pricing algorithm for online information labor markets motivated by exploratory study of Amazon Mechanical Turk (AMT). The algorithm addresses many of the challenges surfaced by the AMT study. We find that AMT pricing is largely done using rules of thumb, which results in inaccurate pricing. Such pricing leads to either excessive costs for employers or low income for worke...

What's the Right Price? Pricing Tasks for Finishing on Time

Many practitioners currently use rules of thumb to price tasks on online labor markets. Incorrect pricing leads to task starvation or inefficient use of capital. Formal pricing policies can address these challenges. In this paper we argue that a pricing policy can be based on the trade-off between price and desired completion time. We show how this duality can lead to a better pricing policy fo...

Are Global Labor Markets Truly “Flat”? Global Frictions, Labor Arbitrage, and Reputation Signals in Online Markets

Visionaries conjecture that the world is becoming a level (“flat”) playing field due to the Internet that connects professional workers with employers anywhere around the world. To examine this “flat world” conjecture for global online labor markets for software development services, we analytically model and empirically examine the key factors that affect the dual aspects pricing of profession...

Dynamic Pricing in a Labor Market: Surge Pricing and the Supply of Uber Driver-Partners

A rich economic literature has explored labor supply when workers flexibly choose how long to work each day. In a seminal paper, Camerer, Babcock, Loewenstein, and Thaler (1997) claim that taxi drivers drive shorter shifts when hourly earnings are high because they hit daily incometargets sooner. This behavior, if general, would undermine the benefits of dynamic pricing in an emerging set of “s...
